The Bats And The Bees.
We’ve heard quite a bit on the news in the last year or so about the disappearing honeybees and the fear that the collapse of the species could result in catastrophic effects for the rest of the environment, but there’s a new epidemic affecting another of our most mythologized creatures: the bat. In a small Vermont town, the population of small brown bats are dying rapidly. While there doesn’t seem to be any identifiable connection between the increasing numbers of deaths among the two groups of creatures, scientists are concerned that the parallel epidemics are telling us something frightening about the state of our environment.
As of now, no one has been able to determine a direct cause of the bats’ illness. The fear is that the bats that will be traveling to different caves as the seasons change will infect other bats, threatening to throw the ecosystem further into imbalance.
